When kingdom hall meetings and Bible studies were moved to Zoom, the congregation worried about Ryan slipping into isolation.Īfter research and conversations with others in the community, “it dawned on me to use email,” Smith said. Smith would sit next to Ryan and tactile sign the talks. Prior to the pandemic, Smith and Ryan attended an American Sign Language congregation in the area. “Our first thought was ‘what about James? What are we going to do for him,’” said John Smith, a Jehovah’s Witness in Ryan’s congregation. When the pandemic hit last March and public meetings were suspended, his congregation mobilized. James Ryan, a Jehovah’s Witness in Fall River, Massachusetts, was born deaf and became blind as a result of retinal detachment at age eight. But what about those who are unable to participate in widely adopted methods of virtual worship?Ī 2008 census by The National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness estimated the population of deaf-blind individuals in the United States to be around 50,000 people. All door-to-door knocking, Subway ministry, and public outreach has moved online since last March.Īs of August 2020, nine out of 10 Americans who attended online religious services said they were either “very” satisfied (54 percent) or “somewhat” satisfied (37 percent) with the experience. Weekly kingdom hall meetings are being conducted over Zoom, and the annual convention, a staple in the Witnesses’ calendar, began virtually last weekend for the second time in history and will continue to roll out through August. It can’t hurt us to be as cautious coming out of this as we were going in.” “But then the Fall was an unmitigated disaster and by January some thought ‘we will never get past this’. “Even when the pandemic was raging, there was a significant drop in the Summer, to where some thought ‘this is behind us,’” Hendriks said. Despite this trend, the organization remains nervous about reopening, especially amid emerging variants of the virus. We want to eliminate it entirely,” he said.Īs of July 2, 67.1 percent of U.S adults have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. “It is not enough for us to mitigate risk. However, the Jehovah’s Witnesses still have no plans to reopen, said Robert Hendriks, spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witnesses American branch. Only 18 percent of Protestants surveyed and 8 percent of Catholics surveyed said their congregations were not open for in-person services. As of March 2021, a similar Pew study found that fewer than one in five people who regularly attend religious services said their congregation was closed for in-person services. Last Spring, according to data from the Pew Research Center, more than 90 percent of Americans who regularly attended religious services indicated that their congregations were closed.

Geared heads allow for controlled movement and precise adjustments often at the expense of speed (especially if the user hasn’t entirely gotten used to the controls). It is, however, not an absolute essential but more of a tool that makes things more convenient and efficient. Geared heads are useful in various kinds of photography that require meticulous composition, especially when not everything can be corrected in post. What Is a Three-Way Geared Precision Head Used For? This way, the photographer has full control of the resulting movement, no matter how small it is. Unlike ball heads and pan-tilt heads, where the knobs control only the friction lock that allows or restricts movement, each knob on the three-way geared head controls a gear that has a resulting movement directly proportional to the turn made on the knob. Each of the three different axes of motion is adjusted independently from the others to be able to achieve precise adjustments when framing a shot. One knob is dedicated to panning, another knob is for horizontal tilt, and the third controls only the vertical or forward tilt. What Is a Three-Way Geared Precision Head?Ī geared head is a kind of tripod head that has three separate control mechanisms for three independent actions. That is mostly because of the efficiency in making minute adjustments as well as setting up meticulous framing and composition. Geared precision heads are generally better known by experienced photographers who may have found the need for the benefits of what is usually a more complicated and heavier tripod setup. Pan-and-tilt heads are also relatively common for most entry-level tripods but are generally less used because of the obvious simplicity of the ball-head’s lock-unlock system. Most tripod kits come with ball-heads that are often very simple to operate with one or two knobs to control everything. Three-way geared precision heads aren’t really the most popular kind of tripod heads, and this may be for practical reasons. It went to air 48 hours later, and is currently set to run through June 10. So on the morning of May 14, Rexha did her own hair and makeup and filmed a dynamic outdoor video of herself performing her song. Now for the next obstacle: could Rexha self-record her appearance in the commercial, and within the next 24 hours? Yes, but Butzky was able to buy an extra 12 hours to give the singer-songwriter a break from separate sessions she’d been logging for her next musical project, expected later this summer. “I was thinking about all the kids this year who aren’t getting the full graduation experience and how I could uplift them and get them excited again by giving them their own special graduation song to celebrate to.”Īfter Rexha’s song inspired several more weekend calls and negotiations, Butzky received word by May 12 that both the song and Rexha herself had secured a starring role in the Walgreens campaign. “I felt it was important to honor the legacy of the song and maintain some aspects of the original while putting a 2020 twist on it,” Rexha says. Rexha infused elements of her own high school grad celebration with the more remote realities faced by this year’s class. This project came together rather quickly because graduations across the globe are happening in real time right now, and I wanted to make sure that all the students have a chance to celebrate with the song.” Writing the perfect song can take a long time, but it’s an exciting and rewarding process. “I definitely like to spend a lot of time with my music, making sure that what the world hears is exactly how I want it to sound. Rexha tells Songs for Screens that the rapid-fire turnaround for Walgreens was counter to the approach she typically applies to her songwriting. “They wanted it to feel youthful and young, and when you’re a gifted writer like Bebe you’re able to capture that.” “By Saturday night, sent back a demo with a 60-second sample and a 30-second version of her lyrics to ‘Pomp and Circumstance,’ where she dropped this beat on it and it just totally worked,” Butzky says of Rexha, who first cut her teeth as a songwriter for Eminem & Rihanna and G-Eazy before being recognized as one of Variety’s 2018 Hitmakers. I knew Walgreens wasn’t going to go with any artist.” Butzky submitted a shortlist of artists by late Friday night, and by Saturday morning had the go-ahead to approach Warner artist Bebe Rexha to write a demo to submit for Walgreens and VMLY&R’s review. “I said, ‘Okay, well, I need to find an artist that can actually write, and wants to do things.’ I had to A&R all this stuff running through our heads and still get it approved by the client. It’s not unlike the Super Bowl rush to secure music for ads that usually occurs during the holidays and extends until the last 48 hours before the Big Game, as song choices get cycled through until the last possible second. As brands and agencies struggle to turn around new commercials that can still inspire and entertain audiences during such an anxious time, the extreme limits placed on filming them means ideas are often greenlit within days of campaigns making it to air. The frenzied campaign music brief, led by VMLY&R’s executive music producer Theresa Notartomaso, has become the new norm in the post-pandemic advertising hustle. Teams just don’t do that otherwise maybe the Mets could have traded Kyle Farnsworth. If you have a poorly performing reliever on a one-year contract, you won’t get any offers for him. If you bump up the trade difficulty one setting, you’ll have a much more difficult time trading. It’s almost like MVP 2004: if you make enough trades, you can get a team full of four- and five-star prospects and players. Yet that’s what happened during the first year of my first franchise. There is just no way the Pirates would deal a healthy Jamison Taillon for Jeff Samardzija and a three-star prospect. If you leave trades at the default setting, they’re far too easy. It’s a lot of information to process, but it ultimately makes the game satisfying. There are a number of ratings, both actual and potential, that underlie a player’s star rating. The ratings seem to be stronger this year, too. It’s not for me, but it might give you some granularity you don’t get with the 10-point system (half stars). You can, if you’re so inclined, eschew the star rating and put guys on the 20-80 scale. To me this is one of the most realistic aspects of the game. If you have a great scout, you might have a diamond in the rough on your hands. You’ll have to hire a scouting director, and the strength of your scouting director will determine how well you evaluate players.įor instance, your scouting director might rate a guy as having five-star potential, but the default ratings might have him as two-stars. When you set up a new league, make sure that scouting is on. One thing I love about OOTP is the ratings system. If you want to play with an international league - Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Cuba, Netherlands, Italy - you can do that, too. Have ideas for different rules? You can implement them. You can also create a completely custom fictional league, even with fictional players. It’s pretty fun to start a historical team and sim like crazy. You can start from many historical points, which is part of what makes this game stand out. You don’t have to play starting at the 2014 MLB season. It’s not the most compelling feature, but it certainly beats the old watching method, if you prefer to play the dramatic games rather than just hit the sim button. A few years after that, actual pitches and swings. I imagine in a few years they’ll have actual 3D player models to stand on the 3D field. It might not be my bag - I want to plow through seasons and see the fruits of my labor - but OOTP has at least made the sim process interesting. You can actually watch the game in 3D mode. If, for some reason, you would like to watch and manage one of your games, OOTP has a new feature to make it more worthwhile. Yet there are always changes that make the newest version better than the previous. The beauty of OOTP is that the engine largely stays the same from year-to-year. There are also some great points in the comments from long-time OOTP players. Too bad this is the year I decided not to buy it.įor a full treatment of OOTP, please click the link above and read last year’s review. It’s also apparently not impossible to score runs in The Show 14. * From what I’ve read, The Show is much more manageable this year due to a number of new features. If you like the management aspects of The Show, but think that actually playing the games takes too long*, OOTP can scratch that itch. For those who don’t, OOTP is a powerful baseball simulation game that provides a fully customized experience. You might remember a review of Out of the Park Baseball 14 from about a year ago. To Peter Qvortrup, directly heated triodes are the perfect and original voltage amplifier for High-End audio application, because its amplification pattern is highly linear, whereas solid-state devices’ “semi-conducting” nature along with the resultant largely non-linear amplification patterns makes them unsuitable. According to product literature, AN claims to be “the first company in the world to realize and therefore re-introduce commercial amplification utilizing the single-ended output stage…” Making control and power amplifiers is Audio Note’s core business, whose owner Peter Qvortrup also claims that it designs and manufactures the best transformers in the High End industry. “Silver Signature” upgrade of the Quest’s utilizes more Black Gate’s, with Audio Note silver wiring and copper wired thin lamination Radiometal 36 C-core transformers, for another $5,600. A $4,000 “Silver” upgrade adds proprietary tantalum resistors, copper foil signal capacitors, Black Gate electrolytic capacitors and High B copper wired C-core output transformers. Upgrade of Quest’s 300B tubes from the Chinese stock to Western Electric’s costs $500 for the pair. The lower model is the Conqueror 300B stereo amplifier, while a pair of Conquest monoblocks surpasses the Quest with two 300B tubes on each amplifier doubling the output to 18 watts in parallel single-ended configuration. The Quest represents the lowest-priced Audio Note “Level 3” single-ended monoblocks utilizing the 300B output tubes. The very narrow and long chassis enables side-by-side placement. At only 23lbs each, a Quest is easily carried around. Only RCA inputs are provided with detachable power cords and three metallic 3-way speaker binding posts for negative, 8ohms and 4ohms impedance. Frequency response for this transformer is 20Hz to 40kHz within 1.5dB. The amplifier is hard-wired throughout, using AN’s copper foil paper-in-oil signal capacitors, and an IE cored transformer with high quality silicon steel laminations, wound with OFC wire. They are “zero feedback, pure class A, single-ended, direct-heated triode output stage, valve rectification and materials and component quality.”Įach Quest monoblock features one 300B output tube, driven by one half of a triode 6SN7WGTA tube, with the other half acting as the input stage, and a choked coupled 5U4G tube for power supply rectification. Similar to Audio Note’s best amplifier products, such as the $60,000 Ongaku (Japanese for music or sound & joy) and the $95,000 Gaku-On (more music!), the subject of this review, the Quest, features six AN technical criteria. We shall also take this opportunity to examine Audio Note’s sophisticated R&D principles. Since the AN-E/D review elaborated on how the speaker performed with the Quest, this review will cover how the Klipschorn sounded with the Quest. My July 2001 review of Audio Note’s AN-E/D speakers was the first of three AN hardware reviews, followed by this review on a pair of AN’s own single-ended, directly heated, no feedback triode monoblocks, the Quest, and an upcoming one on the M3 pre-amp.
